Can we implement a rule for an automatic vacation for "rick rolling"?

People who do this put the URL as the "text" and the youtube link as the actual hyperlink. It looks like they just copy pasted a URL into the reply window. They do this for the sole purpose of tricking people. Is it unreasonable on this forum to think that if the text is formated like a URL, that it's the actual URL?

Mouse-over the link first.

Either way, I promise not to do it anymore.

The point is....the users of this forum shouldn't have to be that paranoid about linked content. Who wants to have rick rolling on the back of their minds all the time?

It's not like they are linking to a video of goatse or anything. Relax and stop slacking at work.

It was a problem for a while when people were linking the forum's logout link to innocent things, i.e. they'd link to http://forums.anandtech.com/logout.aspx but it would show up as http://www.google.com/ in the text of their post. The Mods started banning people for doing that, and it's one of the "unwritten rules" they can nail you with if they need to.

In other words, if you've already managed to get on the Mods bad side I wouldn't recommend doing this with any links.

this is not against our forum guidelines, and will not be a bannable offense.

as has been suggested, it's a good idea to check where a link will take you before clicking it.

we could ask FT to implement a parenthetical notation citing the actual domain linked to for each link like slashdot does if you guys think it would help. i don't know how quickly this could be implemented, but if it's wanted we will persue it. otherwise, just be careful what you click (and what you have your volume set to).

This just further confirms my belief that the AT community has no sense of humor. A harmless prank shouldn't be a reason to increase the moderation workload so that every link can be scrutinized. People who do this for a joke don't need a short vacation, and people who do it for less innocent purposes need a permanent ban.

Derek, this might be a "use for good" of smart tags. In the case of links, if they were treated like smart tags, a hover could pop the smart tag dialog box with the actual link. The FT engine should be able to handle that with a few mods. Not sure about cross-browser compatibility though now that I think about it for more than 2 seconds.
