Can VM install in 32bit Windows 7 ultimate?

Hi guys,

Can VM install in a windows 7 32bits machine? I have a laptop with 32bit processor and windows 7 32 bits. it say the processor not have the feature to support vm, I also have a laptop which have 64 bit processor but I install 32 bits windows due to some compatibilty with some old software I use.

I try to install a windows 98 vm to one of these machines. what is the best way to do it. can I install the win98 in a usb jumpdrive?

Can someone point a link for a free or trial vm for my need? I try to search in the net but get too many defferent result.

Thank you.

The 64 bit machine is probably the most likely to have the necessary virtualization hardware - just run the tool linked by Bubbaleone above to be sure. I have a Win98se VM running under VMware workstation (I still see a Win98 machine once every blue moon to fix, usually running some irreplaceable off the wall software), so it is possible. Be aware if the software you are running needs access to real hardware ports (like a parallel port, or firewire port), you'll likely have compatibility issues.

The easiest way to install Win98 is to rip your install CD to a bootable ISO. You can then create a VM to install it under the free VMware Player. Just run through the new VM creation wizard, which is pretty simple and self explanatory. When it asks for the installation source, just point the wizard to the location of the Win98 ISO on the host machine. Once the OS is installed, make sure to install VMware Tools (you should be prompted the first time you successfully boot the OS to the desktop after installation).

Some notes: if you are installing plain Win98, make sure you set the virtual drive size at less than 64GB, or for Win98se less than 137GB (truthfully, 1-8GB should be plenty). Set max installed memory for the VM to 32MB or less, or you'll probably have...issues. Once you have it installed, you can google around and find some patches to allow you to use more memory (up to 256mb) and even to allow you to run a semi-modern web browser (Firefox 8.0.1 - though still not safe) on it.

If you are going to install XP on Vm, then you can try "XP mode" for win 7. It supported by enterprise and ultimate edition only. Download it from microsoft site, after verification for genuineness of your copy of windows.

Short answer - yes! I have it using XP Mode and MS's VM. I use it for specific legacyware.

XP mode still requires the CPU virtualization support. install CPUZ and get the CPU model from there then google the CPU part numbner

If the CPU has the correct virtualization extensions, you can run either 32 bit OR 64 bit VM's while running a 32 bit host OS.

Windows 98 wouldn't be a problem at all even if doesn't have the extensions.

Just keep in mind that you're still stuck with the 4 GB memory limit of the host OS unless you use the /PAE switch.

Thank you guys. I found an old 98 machine so I go the easy way use it and get the thing done. I guess I will try it one day when I have more time.
Thanks again
