Can vista do the same things as whs

Ok I have whs installed on my other pc. I have been having nothing but problems with it. Usually I cant access the folders it states incorrect password even though I know I am placing in the correct one. Sometimes it lets me go right in without a password. I used windows credatials to save it but that doesnt always work.

What I do with my server is the following
1. I access the folders from my windows 7 pc
2. Play my daughters video games (shes 5 loves zoo tycoon 2)
3. I store my iso and family videos
4. I use tversity to play videos onto an xbox
5. I use ps3 media player to play videos onto an ps3.

So can I setup the whs with vista and do all of the above.
I know I can play games I know I can store iso
I know I can use the media players
The biggest one that I am concerned about is being able to access the folders from one pc to another. If it is possible I would have no idea how to do it.

It may seem like going backwards but I have found XP to be a good home server OS. When patched up and set up properly it can do everything you listed and does it pretty well.

Vista most likely has a connection limit. I think it may be 5. WHS shouldnt have this limit. Now if you dont plan to have more than 5 active connections then Vista can work just fine.

Redo all the sharing and the passwords.

Win 7 should be set to Work Network.
-------------
When configured on peer-to-peer Network, Win 7 has three types of Sharing configurations.

Home Network = Works only between Win 7 computers. This type of configuration makes it very easy to Entry Level Users to start Network sharing.

Work Network = Basically similar to the previous methods of sharing that let you control what, how, and to whom folders would be shared with.

Public Sharing = Public Network (like Internet cafe) to reduce security risks.

The Work Network is the one that most of us are going (and need) to use.

Win 7 Work Network's Sharing settings are in principle similar to Vista's configuration, some menus locations in Win 7 might be in different place, and look a little different, but it should not be a problem to adapt.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions.

When finished with the setting of the system it is advisable to Reboot all the hardware including Router and all computers involved.

Ok so if I do all that then I will be able to access the vista pc from my windows 7 computer.

The biggest thing like I said is I need to be able to access my folders and saved stuff.

That shouldn't be a problem. But neither should be accessing WHS shared folders. I'm involved with about ten WHS servers and haven't seen problems accessing data shares. WHS offers the opportunity to synchronize desktop client passwords to WHS passwords so that you shouldn't have to type in the WHS password once you've logged into your desktop PC.

Can you explain how to do this. I placed my user name and password under windows credantials and sometimes I am able to access and sometimes I am not able to access shared folders.

As for the whs console from a client pc I always get an error on that one. I will have to look it up then type it in here.

I should also state that the auto backup feature from whs always works. There are no complications with that.

Niether one of those were any help the one said to just reinstall whs and I already did that. the other said to type "control userpasswords2" in the run section after I did that Northing came up

One thing I did notice though I went under command prompt and typed echo %username% when I did this it came up as the same user name that was on my whs.

See I named my computer lets say Westy153 and my user name for whs logon Westy153. I was told to keep them the same to help fix logon issues. Is this correct. Btw those arnt my real logons just using examples.

The other thing that happens is when I use remote desktop connection and I try to connect to the server It comes up with an error stateing
"Your Computer could Not Connect to Another Console Session on the remote Computer Because you already have a console session in progress."

To my knowledge I dont have another one in progress

The LogOn of the Boot is Not very relevant to the file sharing system.

You can do Auto LogOn by installing TweakUI for Windows 2003.

If you do not care about Password in the File Sharing System you can switch On the Guest account and allow full use in the Permission and security to Guests.

Ive tried that for guest and it still didnt work.

One thing I just found again. I was told Domain was a bad thing for whs or something like that. Well under windows security (enter network Password) Enter Your password to connect to Server It states a domain name. Its the same domain name as my Windows 7 pc.

If I run Ipconfig /renew I get media state media disconnected. I read up a bit and it said that a network cable is unplugged. Everything that I have works to the point that I can connect and surf the internet.

On my windows 7 pc though it came with two network adapters and I disabled one in the bios

WHS is a Peer-to-peer server.

You probably have a peer-to-peer Network.

The Domain setting in client computers meant for connecting them to a real server like Windows 2008.

😎

So what does that mean. I am horrible at networking. The software end of it. I can hook everything thats real easy but I have never played with software settings.

Since I am having all these issues I think I am going to change to windows vista 64 bit ult and just do what you said above to get the hardrives to share. Thanks for trying to help me out I really appreciate it.

Well I installed vista just to see how it was at networking storage and I have to say it was very easy. All I had to do was click on the drive and then click share and I was pretty much done. I dont care about remote access or being able to download outside my network. I just needed some place to store my files where all my pc could access it.

Seems like a waste then... a little NAS device sounds like it would be a better fit for your needs.

*EDIT* The benefit of WHS is in ease of setup. Assuming you buy an appliance and don't build your own, you bring the box home... unpack it... plug in the power cord, plug in a network cord and turn it on. Install the Connector software on your computers and set up a (or multiple) user account with a few clicks and you're done. You have a network share and automated backups.

I actually just finished installing and setting up the beta of WHS Vail on a $300 box I just built and I forgot how nice it was when I beta tested the first WHS release. I'm definitely going to buy this when the beta is over and it's released.

I liked whs just I kept having issues with connecting to it. I really like the autoback up feature. It was a pain to get all setup but after you did there were no worries.

If I didnt have so many issues with it I would def have kept it. And my daughter is getting older and really starting to enjoy video games. For Zoo tycoon 2 if I attempted to install it on whs it would give me an error invalid os. I tried everything and couldnt get it to work. With vista at least I know games will work and have alaot less issues.

Well WHS isn't meant to get games installed on it, and as far as what others have said, it's *supposed* to be easy and simple to setup. But when it goes wrong the hodge-podged WHS layer on top of S2K3 layer next to some newer special ingredients for Win7 etc makes it a bear to troubleshoot. Especially since it seems like once it gets something in its mind good luck stamping out all occurences of it.

Glad you got something working for you though.

And idea of child playing on the WHS *shudder* 😱D::hmm::awe:

In my experience with the first beta it was incredibly easy to troubleshoot because you were just modifying shares with (3) radio buttons for each user. Maybe I never had to do the kind of troubleshooting you're referring to because it never failed me.

I had some similar problems as Allan with the passwords not matching and share permissions getting buggered up somewhere (generally changing things around at some point angers the Windows gods). Lots of troubleshooting advice online but in the end it always boils down to "Server Re-install"! :awe:

ya that was the same thing I read so I just said screw it. I need something that can store data and play games. Vista is much better for me. I will say I will miss the backup feature. That was a nice little safety net.

Actually... if your other computers have a Professional or Ultimate version of Vista or Win7 you should be able to do full image backups to a network location. You just wouldn't have the easy as pie bootable CD to restore the backups, but they would be there.

Lol I was just about to make a post asking on how to do backups for windows 7. Right now I did the automatic one and I placed it on my network drive. Now for whs it came with a disk I had to place in to start up the backup feature. Does windows 7 have this same feature or is it the windows 7 install disk.

Also it stated on the left hand side
1. Create a system image. Which I t hink is an iso which is what the auto backup does
2. Create a system repair disk. Now is this the disk that I was talking about above. Do I need this to restore from my backups.

I wanna get everything figured out now so when I do have an issue. And I will have issues, I will already know what to do and how to fix it.

Not sure about the restore disk, never used it. The Win7 install disc should be able to restore a backup for you I believe.

The system image that Vista/Win7 creates isn't an ISO, it'll be a VHD... virtual hard disk. You can load that in a virtual machine (using Virtual PC) and copy individual files from the image if you want.

I've never understood what a virtual disk is. Now what I think you are saying is that it will make a copy of your computer and you can copy and paste needed files from that. Am I correct or way off base
