She's probably ruined her metabolism from years of yo-yo dieting, thus her metabolic setpoint at this stage in life is so low, she may only need fraction of the daily caloric requirements a healthy individual needs.

So this chick tells me she's a vegetarian.... But she's fat. I don't understand how someone can be overweight if they don't eat meat. That basically rules out fast food and the tv dinners that are really bad for you. I'm baffled.

Yup. I've never eaten meat in my life. I'm 6' tall with a large frame (4" at the elbow). I topped out at 220 lbs a few years ago when I first got a desk job. I'm below 200 lbs now, my goal is 180-185.

Exactly! And that, combined with a genetic predisposition for obesity means she has a double whammy against her.

Can people really be this stupid?
Of course vegetarians can be fat... not only are there still unhealthy non-meat food, but she could have a thyroid problem, be on medication like prednisone, or it could be genetics.

Hit the weights and you can be 6' 205 like me.

Yes, you can be a fat vegetarian. The question should have been: Can one get fat from being a vegetarian?

I just picture someone sitting down and eating a full plate of bbq....and then someone across the table eating a full plate of spinach leaves. I know there are conditions and problems that can make you overweight. It's sad when genetics play a part too. My sister is obese and it makes me sad to think that she's got blood pressure problems at her age (26). I just don't like the vegans who are basically using it as a fad diet and claiming to be all healthy, when in-fact they're not treating their bodies right.
