You can't get fat from eating meat. You get fat from eating more carbs than your body burns off.

Look! Another Atkins cult member!

Yes, you can get fat from meat if you're genetically predisposed for obesity. It's about calories, not carbs alone.

You can get fat from eating meat. If you eat too much of anything you can get fat. Meat has calories in it also!

Why is it people cannot understand that genetics play a HUGE part in weight gain/average size?

Many obese people can have diets of fewer calories than most skinny people, and still remain fat. It's all in how your genetics dictate fat storage.

Also, previously obese people have a MUCH harder time losing weight and keeping it off because their body now thinks it NEEDS those fat stores, and will do everything it can to gain them back. It's a natural reaction to starvation.

But then, simplistic fools will blame obesity on gluttony and sloth alone, and never understand the reality of it.

Well this *is* OT, where most people think women over 115 lbs are "whales."

The simple sugars of most carbohydrates are usually broken down too fast and end up not getting used because most people sit around. Then they get hungry 2 hours after they eat the carbs... So once again....carbs don't make you fat, lack of exercise does. 😉

If you take the other extreme: If I ate meat every single meal I will garentee that I'll be the weight as I am now as I would know how to balance the different food groups with the right type of excersise.

My diet consists of vegaterian alternatives to red meat (I'll eat white & red meat, but refuse to buy it).

I know about all the sweets, etc. I'm just surprised she's even a vegetarian to "keep the pounds off"....cause it doesn't look like it's working. I've been running 5-6 miles 3-4 days a week lately and take care of myself. I just hate to see people settle for the easy way out. Cutting meat out of your diet can't hurt, but bah.....america needs to get up off its lazy butt and do something.

QFT! QFT!

Being veggie or not has nothing to do with it, I seen enough fat vegetarians. It's all about your metabolism and your lifestyle. You go to the gym 6 times a week and kill it, and you can eat fast food everyday and still be in shape. You are a veggie couch potato eating 10 zucchini's while you watch your reality shows, and you become a sumo.

could be genetic, hormonal, or any other slew of medical reasons.

and, if you eat a lot of food, any food you can get fat anyways. USUALLY though, veggies are not fat.

So this chick tells me she's a vegetarian.... But she's fat. I don't understand how someone can be overweight if they don't eat meat. That basically rules out fast food and the tv dinners that are really bad for you. I'm baffled.

My cousin is probably 300lbs and she is a vegetarian. She'll polish a bag of M&Ms off in record time, though. 😛

A lot of people who say they're vegetarians actually eat fish, or even chicken and fish. Sorry, guys, the flesh of an animal = meat. I know one guy who brags about being a "vegetarian" because he only eats chicken.

Can people really be this stupid?

Of course vegetarians can be fat... not only are there still unhealthy non-meat food, but she could have a thyroid problem, be on medication like prednisone, or it could be genetics.

I just picture someone sitting down and eating a full plate of bbq....and then someone across the table eating a full plate of spinach leaves. I know there are conditions and problems that can make you overweight. It's sad when genetics play a part too. My sister is obese and it makes me sad to think that she's got blood pressure problems at her age (26). I just don't like the vegans who are basically using it as a fad diet and claiming to be all healthy, when in-fact they're not treating their bodies right.

omg! vegetarians don't eat a plate of spinach for a meal. thats not a meal! I eat things like vegetarian chili, burritos, cheesy sandwiches, pasta, quiche, etc all the time...

yes I do eat more vegetables than most people, but my vegetarian meals are pretty damn filling and potentially very fattening.

You are closed minded, meet does not equal fat. Often vegetarians have a really oily greasy diet (vegetarian Indian food). Also you left out the possibility that she got fat then turned into a veggie 😉

Actually...Im a vegetarian, I do not eat meat, but I also eat less fruits and vegetables then my meat-eater roommates. Im on primarily a junk food diet...I should be getting fat soon 🙂
