Can USPS track a delivery if...

... I don't have the delivery confirmation number or reciept? I put delivery confirmation on it. The USPS website said it was delivered last Tuesday or Wednesday, can't remember which. So I threw out the reciept and delivery confirmation slip. Now the guy says he didn't get it yet. I tend to believe him because he has over 400 positive feedback on eBay with no negatives. He didn't pay for the insurance option on the eBay auction, so I didn't insure it... only put delivery confirmation on it... sooooo... it's not really my problem except that if he files a dispute with PayPal, I can't prove I shipped it since I threw out the reciept and delivery confirmation slip. I also paid cash at the P.O. so I won't be able to use a credit card statement to prove it either. If he takes it that far I guess I'll just offer to split the loss with him since he didn't pay for insurance, but I can't prove I shipped it. Any recommendations on what I can do to sort it out... other than that I should have kept the reciept and delivery confirmation slip?

maybe you can get the number from usps if you provide your addy and his addy? some sort of cross-referencing with their computer system...i really don't know what they're capable of so far as that goes
