Can Update Soundblaster Live Drivers

My evil computer had to be formatted due to hangs so I could narrow down the problem. Anyway, right now it is hanging when I play Winamp. So I figure the sound card drivers need to be updated, as they are currently dated 10-7-99.

Creative doesn't give you a zipped bunch of DLL's, they give you a self extracting and installing exe. I have run this thing about a dozen times and it won't update my drivers. I've tried running it in safe mode as well. Any tips or other advise for the Winamp hang? It just holds a note and just hangs....

Thanks,

Thomas

Try removing your sound card from the control panel/system menu. Then run the drivers install program. If it still doesn't overwrite...reboot and get a list of all the drivers being used. Rename them and restart. Run the driver install program again. That should make sure you are using the latest drivers.

Another thing you could try is to use an unzip program to manually unzip your .exe file. Then go into the control panel/system menu and click on the card and update driver. Point it to the drivers you just manually unzipped.

Are you sure the "new" files are really new. They are most likely the same one's you have now, this is the reason for the time stamp being same. Creative doesn't update the drivers unless an issue has come about. Go to their site and see if this issue is listed.

I would go with Jamey's suggestions. You may want to add one more step.

First get the latest drivers from Creative (the executable) and unzip it to a directory for later use (C:\Drivers\Live or something).

Delete the current Livewire Software under control panel Add/Delete Software. Remove the soundcard from the system devices and shut down.

Next physically remove the soundcard and boot up. This will allow the registry to get updated withouth this device. Shut down again and reinstall the soundcard. When Windows recognizes the new hardware, point it to the drivers that you saved on the hard drive.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up taking the soundcard out, and am still getting lockups after about 15 minutes of internet explorer useage. I took out 1 stick of ram to see if that was now causing the conflicts and got the same thing. Right now I've disconnected all the USB devices I have to see if that is causing it.

Do you all have any experience with USB devices causing these sorts of problems? I have a USB Mouse and a non self powered usb hub in my keyboard that connects 2 USB game controllers. I know Windows Me resolved a lot of USB issues, maybe that is what I need to do...

Most likely the suggestion Dallas made will result in windows finding the drivers that were previously installed WITHOUT prompting you for any input. That is why if you go this route, you will have to find them on your computer and remove them (I suggest renaming so you can undo if you create another problem). As far as lock ups with IE...IE users report more crashes than most any other software user. That isn't to say there is nothing wrong. You may make the switch to Win ME, but I have heard bad things about that as well. Make sure all you other drivers are up to date. Remove all unneeded devices and then try.
