Can "Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS" be installed on a Thinkpad with Intel processor?

I was advised that installing Linux Ubuntu would be OK on a Thinkpad T61 or X201 with Intel CPUs running at 2.20 and 2.53 respectively. I was concerned because the OS has the initials ...amd..." in the download. Thanks, "lxskllr."

I was concerned that the "amd" meant only AMD CPUs.

I've never used Linux before.

Amd64 is a technology, it's basicaly x64 so anything 64bit and there is no problem with running it on intel as long as the CPU is 64bit compatible, which any newer part is.

They differentiate 32-bit and 64-bit x86 installs by "i386" and "amd64". All the CPUs that the T61 uses support 64-bit instructions, so you can use whichever version you'd like, but the T61 can accept up to 8 GB of RAM, and you'll only be able to take advantage of ~3 GB or so if you're using the 32-bit OS.

I've used 12.04 on a thinkpad T60 and was very happy with it. I'd be surprised if the T61 would have problems with 14.04.

yes i have xubuntu on a t61; you may want to try that instead as it is quite a bit lighter.
