Can two WiFi 802.11b cards talk to each other without an access point?

Can two WiFi 802.11b cards talk to each other without an access point? I'd like to be able to transfer files to my friend who also has a wifi card, can we do this without an intervening access point?

I've never used it, but I believe you can. I think it's referred to as ad-hoc.
