Can two different video cards run at once?

I've had this 7900GTX laying here for months and I don't know wether to sell it or what. I've got this 8800GTX installed at the moment and before I consider selling my older card, just one question: Can the two cards work together inside of my system for better performance?

Thanks!

not for better performance as the videocards need to be the same for SLI, but you can use it to hook up extra monitors.

What about running programs at higher resolutions? I upgraded from my native 1024x768 monitor to my native 1920x1200. I doubt it but I just thought I'd ask. I guess the cards better off selling.

Unlike video crads can be run at the same time, independently - but not in cooperation.

If you don't run multiple monitors, the 7900GTX will do nothing for you.

Furthermore, if you don't have the correct motherboard, you probably won't be able to run the 7900GTX at all when the 8800GTX is installed.

if you had AMD cards and a CrossFire MB it would work .. you can mix and match Video cards even from different generations. Right now i have a 512bit HD2900XT/512MB [752/854] CrossFired with a 256bit 2900Pro/512MB [750/800] and it gives a substantial performance boost.

i may sell my 2900p and possibly crossfire HD2900xt + HD3870X2 for TRI-FrankenFire ... and a further performance increase.

otoh AtM, NVIDIA Cards must be SLi'd with same generation cards of the same core and memory. Hopefully, this will change - SOON! ... and it would also be nice for multi-monitor support with SLi also :p

if you have an extra PCIe slot, you can use your old card to run a 2nd monitor ... or just sell it while you can still get a few bucks for it

That's not really a different generation, it's the same GPU in a slightly different configuration. To call it a different generation I'd expect a different GPU within the same family, if not a GPU in another generation altogether (e.g. X1900 + HD2900).
