Can two desktops connect to the same printer

I would guess that only one interface could be active at a time - read your printer manual and the FAQ on the mfr's web site for info. But you could get an automatic switch box that would connect to the computer that wanted to send data automatically. I haven't seen such a thing for USB, but they are common for parallel Auto Printer Sharing switch, Parallel. Another option is to share the printer across your network.

In my experience, that is by far the best solution. I have three computers - two printers. One laser and one inkjet. All are shared on a network.

For some reason, once the printer was shared over the network, it lost the ability to print legal size docs. The printer would cutoff as though it's letter sized.

Sounds like a driver problem rather than a sharing problem. Was the printer set to legal sized paper in the driver. You have to have both the document size and the paper size set to legal.
