I've been getting around 9.5-10 hours a night lately, and I notice that i'm not nearly as alert or energetic as I was when I was getting 7.5-8 hours of sleep.

So can oversleeping be detrimental to your health?

I think that with 10 hours you are cutting one of your sleep cycles in half, so your body is going through the day trying to catch itself up. Try getting your sleep in multiples of 90 minutes

YES! There was a recent study (maybe someone has the link) that people who slept 7 - 8 hours a night lived longer than those that did 9 or 10.

Of couse, the people that slept less were probably more likely to be fit, and active people, as opposed to LAZY, FAT A55es ;)

If you find that you require getting abnormal amounts of sleep, like 18 hours a day regularly, it could be a sign of depression. From what you are saying, I think the effect is called "sleep inertia" where you seem more tired than you would after a bit more sleep. It's perfectly normal and I haven't seen any studies suggesting harm to one's health. Besides most people are sleep deprived anyway so if can squeeze in an extra hour or two I wouldn't think its a bad thing.

10 hours isn't beyond the normal range. People can sleep anywhere from 6 to 10 hours. I sleep 7-9 hours depending on how tired I am.

A good test is if you eat a big meal of carbohydrates and you feel tired that means your not getting enough sleep. After fueling up you should feel good and alert.

After eating, more blood is directed towards the stomach. The stomach breaks down the food and the blood carries the nutrients. I was told that is why you get tired after eating.

unhealthy people sleep more.

EDIT: especially if you find yourself sleeping more and more as the months go by.

I was gonna say what you said in the second sentence - that study is kinda meaningless ;)

you can't get too much sleep. when your body no longer needs sleep, you wake up and won't want to go back to sleep again.

I once read a study claiming the body only needs 4 hours of sleep each day. That study can bite me. I need much more than 4 hours but I do think it's unhealthy to oversleep constantly.

I think if you've been sleeping more, you should counteract it with exercising a bit more. You're probably taking in the same amount of food as you used to, and your metabolism is either the same or slower because of the extra sleep, and that's why you're probably storing more fat, which might make you feel sluggish.

Try working out for 30 min-1 hr. each day-every other day, and see how that works. Chances are, you'd probably go back to sleeping 7.5-8 hours.

(i really should do what i preach, haven't worked out for about 2 weeks :()

Sleeping can be bad for your health if done too much or if done in the wrong position.

Blod clots can form in your veins and arteries. When you get up from the sleep that clot goes to your brain or heart and POW!

i only get around 3-4 hours a day. I can't seem to fall asleep between 11PM-2AM. At least i don't go to Caltech like my friend who gets around an hour every day. Weekends don't change a thing BTW.
