FOlks, I just got an amazing new prebuilt system (yes...finally, I actually bought a prebuilt one instead of building it myself) I got the new GATEWAY FX-6831 for 1299- and its a wonderfully designed system. i870 with 8GB RAM and Radeon 5850 with 1.5 TB HD

So to my point....I have just took the plunge and upgraded my old P4 system I built and have this pretty cutting edge PC but Im still using my old Viewsonic Professional Series 21" Montior (Viewsonic P225) The monitor is excellent for video, Photoshop, Gaming, etc but Im starting to yearn for a 16:9 display like one of those new 24" LCD monitors but my main concern is...

Has LCD technology caught up to CRT in terms of gaming lag, refresh speeds, and Color accuracy??...or should I wait longer for LCD's to develop further?

What do you guys think?...and if so, what LCD would you recommend as the best for Photoshop reproduction and Gaming FPS.

In the 24 or 23" range

Nothing in this current generation of flat displays will ever match the speed/lag/color reproduction of a good CRT, but they will come close. The best gaming LCDs are TN based for low gaming lag, but color reproduction suffers. The better LCDs as far as color reproduction are IPS based which tend to be a bit slower.

I will let others give recommendations!

You can either get great colours or great refresh speeds but not both.

The Acer GD235HZ is 120hz 23.6 inch is a pretty sweet gaming monitor, but colours not so great. You'll want something like the NEC EA231WMi if you want better colour accuracy, but then you loose out on response time and smoothness.

This is a LCD I bought for my new Gaming PC I just built... I really like it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...master%20p2370

2ms Response time with a 50000:1 contrast ratio

Definitely impressive in my opinion, but there may be others out there that top it.
I would recommend it to you though.

Can't go wrong with samsung in my opinion :)

lol I see this potentially turning into another LCD versus CRT war, especially from the CRT crowd.

umm most CRTs still in existent today are old! Your professional Viewsonic may have been nice, but i'll bet it's blurry right now! Text are blurry. Oh yeah, I've used quit a few professional CRTs in the past, and all of them are going bad. It's the nature of the Trinitron tube.

I'll bet your CRT isn't a lightweight either, right?

Today's IPS based panels (check from Dell and HP) are great monitors. It just doesn't make any sense anymore to even think of CRT unless all you do all day is game professionally in mommie's and daddy's basement.

Hell even the anal retentive Mac folks are going LCD with their photoshop and video editing stuff.

I was a CRT holdout for screen speed / gaming. As nice as my Sony 21" is / was, it really was getting blurry.

I replaced it with an LG 27" 2ms TN monitor and I am extremely impressed at how well it works for gaming.

I don't do anything that demands much color accuracy - just office work and gaming and the dithering on a TN panel does not bother me.

The thing that did surprise me - I had heard that the response time specs were mostly marketing and not to worry about it - so I started with an HP 2508 and it had just a little ghosting but I decided I could live with it. I returned it due to the glossy screen and got the LG 27" panel and I am shocked at how fast the response is.

I continue to notice details that escaped me on the CRT and while I would say the speed of the screen is not quite as good as a CRT, it's very close (94% as good IMO) and certainly good enough. The extra space and resolution more than make up for it.

I tried LCDs many years ago and the ghosting just killed it for me so I vowed never to change but it is now time to change.

If you are a gamer, get your screen from a place that lets you return it (Frys) - you need to put a few hours in to see how it works for you.

The other thing that initially bothered me was the viewing angle color shifting - it is more pronounced on larger TN panels and I thought it was going to be a deal breaker - it really bothered me the first day or so - then I just got used to it. Some people won't - everyone is different.

I think the NEC EA231WMi and Dell 2209WA are the best balance between speed, color accuracy and price. There are 4 120Hz monitors that I know of if gaming is all you care about or you want 3d.

Is your monitor the LG W2753V-PF?

I've been looking at that. Looks a good deal for the price.

The "best" CRTs? Viewsonic's P225 was a good monitor but well short of the "best" tier in professional CRTs, which were well over $2000.

I guess the thing im most concerned about is the lack of color gradation and black levels that the LCD will bring in comparison to the CRTs which gives me very smooth color blending and great levels of black without being overly crushed

what do u guys think?

I was in the same boat as you, and while current monitors are still not perfect at all they really have come a long way. I am using two TN panels and they are fine for a desktop PC. I mostly play games, with web browsing, and hulu filtered in as well.

The viewing angle is only bad if you are not on a level with the lcds, horizontal is not that bad really.

The colors are not accurately reproduced but with a little work in my graphics drivers they're fairly close and they are surely vibrant (wide gamut). The panels have an overdrive feature but there is not any ghosting without it so I do not bother to use it.

Overall I am much more pleased with it than the crt. Also I can view these for hours and it does not bother my eyes, whereas with the crt after about an hour my eyes would water.

My advice is to do a little research and grab the LCD that is best for you. The ZR24w just came out and holding out for reviews but I think if I were in the market now I would have my eyes on that display.

Nah don't worry about! Get an IPS LCD and you won't regret it.

But if you're anal about getting CRT, well here you go

Ouchie!!! Reminds me of about 18 months ago my TV gave up the ghost so I needed a new one. I didn't know that you couldn't buy old school TV's anymore.... glad I found a great deal on an LCD.

Anyways.. regarding CRT monitors.. myself.. and most people I have asked.. cannot stand to look at a CRT once they get used to LCD. It hurts the eyes. After purchasing my LCD TV I bought a 28" LCD monitor two weeks later. I can now stare at pictures of computer hardware for hours without eye strain. :p
