My cousin really wants to buy one of these chips and put it in his current laptop, an HP. Here are the cpu-z screenshots of the laptop.

If he is not able to upgrade to a Dothan, what would be the next best choice??

Thanks for any info!

no, the CPU in that computer is a P4-M, not a P-M like the Dothan. The socket has 478pins while the newer Dothans have 479pins and are not electrically compatible. I think thats the best that laptop will do.

The answer is no. Totally different chips/chipsets/sockets.

Laptops are not generally upgradable. I would think that an HP/Compaq/anything except ASUS is not upgradable.

Although it may accept a more powerful Northwood-based P4-M. (They go up to 3.2 Ghz)

EDIT: that board looks as if it would only support 400 FSB P4-Ms. So you are probably limited to 2.4-2.6 GHz

The best choice would be just to wait and buy a new laptop when he has enough money. (Wait for P-M dual core, his laptop should be fine for a while)

You should check if HP had posted any new BIOS for the laptop. When Intel released new CPUs, Dell would normally release new BIOS.

Is removing and installing a mobile CPU in a laptop difficult?
I have never done it before.

Opening and closing a laptop can be a real challenge. Swapping the CPU once it is open is trivial.

Last week I installed a Dothan 2.1G for my Dell Latitude D505. It's quite easy because Dell has all the technical documents on the web for reference.

But generally speaking, it's not easy to take laptop and replace the CPU.

I hate taking the keyboard off to get inside notebooks. I'm always paranoid some key will stop working.
