(16x/4x/16x DVD+RW, 12x/4x/16x DVD-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 40x/32x/48x CD-RW - SKU: TSH552BWBCH)

Buy a BenQ instead. Better drives and worth the extra cash. Also don't use DL discs, they don't work too well, cost too much and generally aren't worth the hastle.

Um, why the hating on DL discs?

Just make sure you use quality DL media, aka Verbatim.

It is true that from a cost/GB ratio they are a terrible buy but for convenience ...

Bob how many DL disks have to worked with and what did you do with them?? They work great for what most people need. Yes they are expensive but worth it if you need to back up that much info and want to use a DVD instead of hdd.. There is no hastle with them if you use them properly.. I use a Sony Dru710 drive have for a few years now and it works great have only had 3 coasters sofar.

The hate for DL? It's just not as reliable, even Verbatim DL aren't great, I simply don't trust them at all. I lost hundreds of Gigs of photos, music movies etc. because i backed up on unreliable media, and i'm still kicking myself for it now.

Not to mention the massive cost, slow burn rate, difficulty to obtain the discs, compatability issues and the whole load of baggage to go with them.

Since i started using good discs i haven't had a single coaster. I've burnt well over 100+ with three drives using TY and verbatim discs and the only coasters i've ever had were due to poor media (before i realised just how bad the budget brands were)

But by all means, for some people DL is worth the effort, but i doubt the OP is if he didn't know what to look for in the specs.

Actually, I already have this Samsung drive, not looking to buy it or anything.

Also, is it true that it is better to read dvd discs using a DVD ROM drive, versus using a DVD RW drive?

Bob nobody is sayin that bad media wont kill ya. But for the most part DL media is only resold under a few names at the moment the most well known of which right now is Verbatum. Which you your self have said is good media. You get what you payfor in DVD media. I like the Sony disks with Corelock for my +r media and I use Verbatum DL for my Dual Layer media. I never burn faster than 4x when doing dvds and no more than 2.4 for my DL media. You just have to know what you are doing when you are burning or you may get burned... '
