Some person told me today that they have been tracking my traces on the net. THey said there is a way to hack into the internet and learn about where all a person has visited and what sites they are registered to. I am wondering how easy this is becuase this person is not computer savvy at all. If there is a way, please tell me
 
well, hacking into "the internet" is a somewhat vague comment. the internet itself isn't a thing, its simply a big collection of computers linked to eachother. it is possible for someone to discover what sites you have been to, but you have to be fairly computer savvy to do this. there are really only a few places that stores what sites you have been to/are registered to. first, your own computer, of course. secondly, if you are on your computer at work, there will probably be a log somewhere of the sites you have visited. im not positive, but i believe your ISP also may keep a record of this as well. as for the sites you are registered to, the only records are kept (a) on the website you are registered at, and (b) on your home computer.
while it is possible for someone to "hack" your computer and discover these things, i'd consider it unlikely, especially if the person is not computer savvy, as you stated. so, don't be too worried about it.
 
big thanx to you. I didnt think so. I am a computer science major and never had heard of this at all. I dont know if this person was just trying to scare me(enemy) or what? I dont know who is a bigger moron..them for telling me this or me for beleiving.
 
A VERY specific case related to your concerns:
This privacy concern is one of the caveats of the usage of Microsoft's "Passport" subscription\membership. It does actually store all your MS Passport related information, making it possible to know your activities. But this is only limited to things related to MS Passport.

Comment about ISP:
Yes, it is possible for them to know every place you hvae ever visited and what places or forums, etc that you "subscribe" to. But you know what? It's also possible for someone to know where you are at all times since the day you were born other than yourself.

If I was an astrophysicist and had a boxer claim the world was flat, I wouldn't even question his stupidity...I would assume I was right.

Especially when they use terms like "hack 'the internet'". And frankly, if you are a CS major you'd better be running a firewall and more, or else you don't belong in the department 😉

of course anywhere you go on the internet leaves a trace. Don't you know?? When you log on to the computer, you sign onto your ISP, that's logged. When you visit a site, your IP address gets registered with the site. Heck, as soon as your computer is on, some of you apps send out signals back "home" to let them know your on.

How many times have you been notified by Zonealarm, whether to grant access to bunch of Adobe, MS, or Rio apps? If you don't run a firewall, guess what, you're open access.

When Miscrosoft makes a claim that software piracy costs the company 6 billion a year, guess how they know that? From all the homing illegal software does when the user is not careful. They back cross registration and product numbers to determine who is legal and how is not. They can't use this info in court because it is unauthorized, but nothing that says they can't gather informal info. If 3 million copies of Win XP with the same serial number gets registered on their mainframe, they know 2999999 of them are illegal. If NSA and CIA can monitor ALL telecommunications in the world, then how hard do you think it is to track a careless guy on the internet??

If you don't know what is possible, then you need to a afraid. Be very afraid.

Are you kidding me? Don't you remeber when they were hunting for Osamar Bin Ladin in Afganistan, they were tracking him by the origin of his cell phone signal. They were also monitoring the terrorists comminication via satillite, till the men figured out from watching their news that their locations were being revealed by their phones. you think they GAVE their numbers to the CIA to be tracked?

The NSA doesn't have the staff or the resources to intercept them all, and even if they did it's a statistical impossibility that any significant percentage of them will ever be read. Generally to monitor means to check the quality or content of. A small percentage of the information traffic NSA intercepts every day is even decrypted/examined ("Monitored"). That traffic itself is only a small percentage of the global information traffic each day. It is completely impossible for the NSA to get every signal sent everywhere in the world, or even an appreciable percentage of that traffic. Additionally, the CIA does not participate in Signals Intelligence, they are focused on Human Intelligence and Analysis. The NSA is the only body (granted exceptions for smaller operations, the military and civillian police) that works on signal intercepts. And as I said, it is impossible for them to even come remotely close to getting everything.
