Can they find better informed people for peace protests?

Manon Terrell, a 19-year-old sophomore, missed three classes to take part in a rally at Stanford University, where about 300 people carried signs that read "It's the Middle East, not the Wild West" and "The majority of us didn't vote for this war."
You don't vote for war. You vote for representatives. And I'm betting that many of those protesting were not eligible to vote and/or chose not to.

"This is a personal thing for me because my friends are going to fight this war," said Terrell, a civil engineering major. "It's not going to be Bush and his cronies in business suits on the front lines. They're going to take people of color and poor people."
These men and women VOLUNTEERED to serve in the armed forces. They aren't 'taking' anyone. There was also a recent study showing the amount of participation by racial groups in the armed forces is statistically similar to their numbers in the population. What is more, the amount of 'white' front line soldiers is statistically higher than their number in the population.

Joe McTaggart, 49, who skipped work and joined about 100 demonstrators in Raleigh, N.C., said he thinks a war is "going to be such a disaster I had to come out."

"There's a lot of people who are against the war, but don't say anything," he said.
Yes, disaster for Saddam Hussein. There are also alot of people for the war but don't say anything.

Can they find better informed people to start threads about these Anti War Protestors?

Since your rebuttals to the protesters points were basically irrational, what was your point.

We don't vote for war and we didn't vote for Bush. He got in loosing the popular vote nation wide and in Florida. We never vote for war but we don't need a uniter who divides the nation on a religious issue like new century imperialism.

The fact that our soldiers volunteered doesn't mean they signed up to be cannon fodder for a religious crusade.

It's not a thread crap. Your thread was crap though. Frankly I understood exactly what it was they were saying and even though I don't agree with them they didn't seem dumb to me. On the other hand your post labeling them as dumb seemed to show that you had trouble grasping what they were saying and that you might not have been smart enough to understand what it was they were saying.

On the side note, I would be careful to make any statements in reference to Stanford students' intelligence.

So, all the threads that Moonbeam and Red Dawn have participated in where they call people 'dumb' or 'not smart' is ok for them but not for someone they disagree with. Ok, fiiine...I'll just call them 'ill-informed' instead of 'not smart'.

You make a pathetic Martyr you know that? Your main purpose posting this thread was to belittle those who thought differently than you do about this war. Unfortunately you only managed to make yourself look silly for all your effort. I was just pointing that out to you.

My main purpose was not to belittle but to point out fallacies in anti-war protest arguments. I applaud them for protesting but would like to see some real substantive arguments other than Vietnam era 60s rehash slogans. And I point directly to the guy in the article that said the US is taking minorities and poor people and making them fight. That is a fallacy...plain and simple.

OK Queasy, now that you've changed the wording of the thread topic your point makes more sense. No hard feeling friend🙂

Do you have a source for that study about race of frontline troops? As I recall, it had some serious flaws.

Gotta agree with Red-Dawn about understanding what they're saying. I'm sure they're just as aware as you are that war wasn't on the ballot. Taking their signs literally doesn't reflect on their intelligence, it reflects on yours, if you are truly unable to understand what they're saying.

We get it, you think the war is a necessary thing. But all this "the other side isn't as smart as me, and that's why they don't see it like me" stuff is just incendiary and untrue. I've seen your posts, and though I usually disagree with what you say, you seem to have some intelligence. Admitting that those who disagree with you are your equals doesn't hurt the point you are making, but rather enables a more respectful debate.

No problem. 🙂 Sometimes I type faster than I think so my point comes out poorly sometimes. 🙁

Book smarts and common sense are often mutually exclusive 🙂 I work with people who graduated summa cum laude from MIT and they can't figure out how to plug their USB mouse into their laptop.

I read it about two months ago so I'd have to dig for the link.

Stanford also is ranked #2 in the country in sports by SI, second only to Texas. An institution that really cares about academic standards can't be the best at sports, it's just impossible. Obviously Stanford lets their athletes not measure up to other student acceptance standards which makes the university loose all respect from me.

I'm sure they are broken up about that...

Why would you hold signs of protest without literal meaning? How do you prove any points by using rhetoric or cliche with no fact or truth statements?

A simple sign saying "War is bad" would make more sense then ones they are using. Besides, if they truly want their voice to matter, they should run for office some day. Untill then, all they have is a vote of representation. If people don't like what their representatives choose, then vote for someone else. Get involved politicaly. Actually form a strong voice and have it heard. Talk about the situation with fact and honesty, and perhaps you can change their mind. That goes way further then just holding signs in streets.

Silly arguement. Would they not take a percussionist for their concert band if he didn't score high enough? No! Each school gets to choose what they want to bring in as a student to make a university more complete. You would be suprised though at the athletes intelligence in most cases at a better school.

Gee thanks...that makes my employer feel better. LOL

I think if you look back at my posts you'll see that I generally stay away from the name calling or belittling and I disdain threads where posts begin with "You're an idiot."

I read this article and was fairly ticked at the guy who said that we are 'taking' minorities and poor people to put in harms way. That is a fallacy, a Vietnam Era rehash, and an insult to those who volunteered for our armed forces.

Like I said, I would just like to see more substantive arguments from these protestors other than the same tired old slogans and rhetoric. 'Bush is a Nazi' and the like do not make for a compelling argument.

Riiight says who, so the more one studies, and have high Iq's the dumber or more ignorant one gets. 😉 It defies all common sense for sailboats to sail against the wind, however with a little education even you can learn to do it🙂
