can these work together, both are 512x2 dual channel 1GB,

adding up to be 2GB

They'll run at DDR400, or possibly DDR333 if they're in the same channel. But you'll get 2GB.

What he said, except I'd think they'd run dual channel at DDR-400.

There's no problem in mixing and matching memory sizes and speeds, as long as they're all supported by your motherboard because they'll all run at the same speed as the slowest modules in your mix.
