Can the XP Automatic Updates service be disabled with a registry entry?

Instead of going to the control panel and administrative tools, then to services, is there a way to disable the Automatic Updates service on XP using a registry entry?

Some people might want to "really" disable the autoupdate service, after all it can still download and install updates even when set to "off". Blame MS for that.

Please get your facts straight before spouting your nonsense. The problem was with Windows Update downloading and installing patches to AU for those that set AU to notify them first before downloading or installing updates. If the user had AU set to off, then the update was never downloaded and never installed. Microsoft has addressed this and will not make that mistake again. The last patch to WU was handled properly, as I was informed first before the updates were downloaded and applied.

People need to start doing actual research into these types of issues instead of putting on tin foil hats and yelling "the Martians are coming!"
