We in the west might not understand the particular circumstances that South Africans have experienced over the decades with respect to racial segregation. Coming from a South African commentator, I think it just goes to show that all is still not well in South Africa, so many years after the apartheid ended.

I also think that his comments are true in general, regardless of the sport or the nation. As soon as the sporting frenzy ends, reality hits hard. I simply don't believe that a sporting event can carry enough weight so as to bring far-reaching change in society, no matter how grand it is.

Your thoughts? Resident Proteas?
