Can the switch function of router/switches be used by itself?

Can a router/switch be used solely as a switch, say in a gateway network where a PC is the gateway?
Don't ask why I would want to do this, it's a long story.

u mean those 4 port router/switch ? yes, when ur cable modem connection dies, you can still use the switch to talk to your local lan pcs...

as long as all computer on the switch is on the same ip segment, no problem... just need to share

Yeah!

You can use it as a Switch. Just make sure that if your Internal Network has fixed IP, or you are using DHCP server else where, switch off the DHCP in the Router.
