can the motor/head of a drive fail slowly?

trying to figure out what's up with my WD Green drive. it reads/writes at less than 1meg /second. 983KB/sec at the mo. no bad sectors on it. it's connected via usb caddy but i put a diff drive in there and that's fine.

i deleted the volume etc and still slow as crap (truecrypt says 17 days to format it! - 1.5TB)

shame SMART doesn't work over usb 🙁

Remove the drive and stick it on a desktop machine, unless it is in warranty.
That would be about the only way to know what SMART is showing.

I had same issue with three WD green drives.

RMA it and get another.

The green uses intellipark and sometimes in certain set ups you can get the failure your seeing. I've had issue in desktop install so that's not gonna fix it.

not in warranty - damn thing ran out last month!

i left truecrypt to format it last night and it's sped up now to 21MB/sec. weird. i'll hook it up internally when i next reboot and see what's up.

Silly question, we used to run www.harddrivedatasavers.com

Yes its physical rotating part, thats how drives die and tick.

ok, its formatted via truecrypt. mounted it and copied some files and now it's transferring over at 40MB/sec. very very weird
