Can the company come after us?

Highly possible. And if they're registering other similar names like you say, then I'd say likely.

"Fortis" is a registered trademark (actually there are several). Specifically, there is a trademark (http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=nt77c8.4.74) that appears to be the company you mention that lists "financial investment in the field of securities". So I would think you could be considered a competitor.

Why would you pick the name of a company that offers similar services? Especially one so unusual? Seems to me perhaps you wanted to gain from the name recognition?

We like the name fortis.

in latin it means "strong"

I knew there was a Fortis, Inc but didnt realize they were also in the investment business.

It's a sure thing they will come after you as soon as they are aware you exist. You are in the same field as they are and their name is trademarked. Basically, if you have any level of success you will end up having to bear the financial burden of having to change your company name, website, printed material, etc.

I think it's better to be safe by choosing a different name now, rather than take a chance.
