Can?t decide 215TW or 20WMGX2???

I am in the process of replacing my broken viewsonic P810. I have narrowed the search down to the NEC 20WMGX2, which looks awesome besides not being able to rotate the panel into portrait, and more expensive and smaller than the Sammy 215TW witch looks perfect besides the input-lag issue but some people don?t see it. My usage will be 90% photo/video editing, desktop apps and 10% Gaming. Will the NEC be that much better to sacrifice 1in and an increase in cost? Or is there another panel I should be looking at?

I would try for the 2007wfp but I don?t want to deal with the lotto issue. Has anyone seen these panels side by side? I will be calibrating whatever panel I get to sRGB with a Spyder2pro. But from what I have been reading either panel should be somewhat close out of the box.

Thanks for any help

The 20WMGX2 should calibrate to better settings (it has a tighter gamma curve). This LCD was worth every penny to me, though I haven't seen the 215TW.

I own the 215TW and the display is beautiful. It is supposed to be the better monitor for photo work from what I've researched. It is bright, has great contrast and I have yet to notice any banding whatsoever. FPS games were a big problem for me when I first got it as it has noticeable input lag IMO. However after making some adjustments to the games and in drivers, and after using the monitor for a while it is no longer a big deal for me.

Actually they calibrate really close to each other. The difference is negligible. The 215TW achieves a better black level and it has better contrast in general, but that isn't the whole story. S-PVA panels do omit details when viewed at a perpendicular angle. Despite that, the 215TW is known to be able to produce all of the lower levels of gray even at a perpendicular angle, so I can't put that against the 215TW. All the other advantages (viewing angle, response time, and definitely input lag) would make the 20WMGX2 worth the extra $120 to me, though. If you need pivot (portrait/landscape), you can forget about the 20WMGX2. I love the coating, which is another advantage of the NEC, but it's definitely not for everyone. Some people loathe it. It does increase contrast and eliminates ambient light that emanates amongst the panel (glare). The reflection is non-existent for me as I have a "diffuse" style lighting system in this room (bright lamp pointing right at the ceiling, no incandescent light is aimed at the LCD). In the daytime there is a tad, but not enough to be bothersome. I would rather get heavier curtains than get rid of this LCD. :D

Was it the "render x frames ahead" setting that reduced input lag for you?

No glossy screen is also a must for my tastes ;)

Well I have been using the 215tw for about a week and like everything about it EXCEPT for the screen door effect does the NEC have the same problem? I most notice it when looking at a white background? Any NEC users notice this?

Thanks

Screen door effect means that you see the pixels. You are lucky to have such excellent vision

The NEC is a bit smaller and has the same resolution, so the smaller pixels should help a little in reducing the screendoor effect. Something else you might try is moving the monitor far enough so that you don't notice the individual pixels.

The screen door effect is a big downfall with the 21"-22" monitors that use 1680x1050 native resolution. I have a Gateway FPD2185W (Same basic montior as the Samsung 215TW), and I had to replace it with my current Acer due to the screen door effect. It gave me headaches.

Wow.....I have the 215tw and don't notice any SDE.....your eyes must be exceptional or sensitive to such stuff. I've had no input lag issues. Coming from an excellent CRT I do notice a bit of ghosting/blurring though.

Don't know what to tell you about that. I notice it if I look for it, but it certainly isn't bothersome to me.

The 215TW is excellent, but i have yet to see an LCD on the same plateau as the 20WMGX2.

Opticlear simply pwns all if the right room lighting is in use.

The problem I have with it is that it is a bit too small. I saw the Sammy and the NEC side by side and it's funny the difference that extra inch means.
