Can Subwoofers damage computer equipment?

Its always advised to keep your sub under your desk for the best sound, yet for most people, their tower is also down on the floor not too far away. So now i'm wondering, is this safe? Most of the stuff in computers is non moving, but for things like optical drives and especially hard drives, can this excessive vibration/pounding from the sub be dangerous? The space between the platter and the r/w head in a HD is like the size of a human hair and is easily scratched, so couldn't the vibration be bad for it, and perhaps is causing all these noisy/failing HD these days?

Don't worry about it. That is what the case are for. It shields out the interference.

If you really want to, you can get some noise dampening pads on the inside of your case which would also help prevent noise from the outside coming in.

Subs are shielded yes, but not from sound vibration.

I've had my subs under my desk for a couple years, and my harddrives are all fine, including my 5 year old IBM drive :)

Unless of course you're haulling in seven 12" subs with 800 watt amps a peice and putting them next to your tower i'd say your ok.

Not all subs are shielded. Most quality ones are, but I don't think the set of "1000W PMPO Tin Can PRO w/SUBWOOFAR" ones you can buy at Billy Bob's Bait Shop and Computer Emporium would be.

Unshielded subs can warp monitor colours, and - well, don't use them as a place to stack your backup/boot floppies.

Never heard of vibration-induced damage though. Probably because it's about as rare a phenomenon as a Blood Moon. (Mind you, we had one on the 15th ...) :p

I wouldn't put it near the PC because of the vibration and magnetic field but also under the desk is not necessarily the best. Besides, what do you think it is doing to your family jewels? ;)

you mean most lower quality pc speaker subs are shielded;) its ussually the low power ones with small subwoofers that could possibly be placed on a desk that have shielded subs. otherwise if you have a powerful sub, its def not shielded.
