AMD FX8 vs AMD Phenom II

I am thinking of upgrading my current system which is the AMD Athalon X2 64 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3GHZ.

Will I notice a big difference if I upgrade?
Thanks

You will notice a big difference, what motherboard are you using? If you're spending the money, you may want to look at a lower end Intel set up, though.

The AMD FX 8120/8150 are Bulldozer based chips. They are sort of a quad core/octo core hybrid. The Phenom II is a quad core or hex core (depending on the model) that is somewhat based on the A64 architecture.

Either will be a huge upgrade, but you need to make sure your motherboard supports the CPU first.

Which ever you choose you will notice a world of difference. If you can,buy FX8120 and OC the hell out of it(~4.5-4.8Ghz is possible on air). It's ~160$ on newegg and probably can be bought for less elsewhere. You can get top AM3+ boards for ~100$ and DDR3 is rather cheap.

Better deals can definitely be had if you have a Micro Center nearby.

He has a 90nm processor and you guys are talking about these AM3+ chips as if they are drop-in upgrades. He's likely on AM2/DDR2 so he is looking at a new system. And BD is at the top of the list now, eh?

I was thinking the same thing. Unless he's sporting an AM2+ board, there's not much he can upgrade to. Might as well "drop in" a Ivy Bridge 3570k in this case along with a new motherboard and RAM.

Yet I just dropped a Phenom II X3 into an old AM2 mobo (M2R32-MVP) for a nice, cheap ($40), upgrade.

A Phenom II made sense as an upgrade for my AM2+ board. BD won't work in it, obviously. That's why some of us asked what board he has.

OP, since you're doing a new board and memory anyway, if I were you I wouldn't limit myself to just AMD these days. Unlike many here I wouldn't automatically exclude AMD, either. Is this for gaming? General use? Something else?

Fair enough, I'm pretty similar in that I've always used and had great luck with my AMD hardware. Just that the performance difference is hard to ignore these days, so I would have to consider Intel. With that said, if you are going to buy AMD, I think the 8120 is pretty good deal, a lot of processor for the money. But for a general use machine you might be better off with the 6200, less cores, more clockspeed. Both are the same price on Newegg.

*edit - Just saw you are looking at the 8150. At that price I don't think it's a terrible choice, you get the best of both worlds... clock speed and cores.
