Can someone tell me what the point of owning rabbits as pets are?

1) they don't recognize anyone
2) even to their owner, no matter how much you feed/clean/etc them, they still run and scurry every time you try to pick them up
3) they are afraid of everything and will seek out corners, under beds, or behind furniture to hide and remain there as long as possible

What's the point?

What's the point of such a dumb pet? This includes all rabbits, rats, gerbils, hamsters, etc.

Fish are not so much pets as projects. A nice, clean, beautiful aquarium is something truly to behold. And dogs/cats have enough intelligence to have feelings besides 'terrified' and can learn and identify their keeper from strangers.

But rabbits are neither projects nor compassionate pets. Why do people have them?

1) My rabbit definitely recognizes me
2) She comes to me when I call her
3) She stays in the middle of the room running around most of the time...when she goes under the bed she always comes out when I call her.

Your point was?

They're fun to watch, and relatively easy to care for. My girlfriend has owned a couple over the years and they've ranged in personality from being exactly as you have described to being very affectionate. The current rabbit will smoosh her face against her hutch whenever people pass by hoping to get her head scratched.

They're fluffy :) And they balance pancakes better than any other pet...

Rabbits aren't as dumb as you think.
I'd rather have a well trained rabbit than a cat. (and rabbits can be litter box trained just like cats, in case you didn't know... You can easily let a trained rabbit roam the house)

I still prefer to eat rabbits... but not as a stew... Sauteed in a nice white wine sauce. Mmmmmmmmm

We had a rabbit. It was stupid and dumb. It was far stupider than any cat I've ever met, and required more maintenance. Other than cleaning a litter box every few days a cat requires no maintenance, and litter boxes are easier to clean than a rabbit cage (even if a neglected rabbit lives in its own sh8t for 2 months each time). rabbits, hamsters, etc. are all stupid pets (normally). We've gone through many. You get bored with them and start quietly waiting for the day it will die so that you stop having to look at its neglected cage.

i always thought rabbits, gerbils, hamsters and the like were to teach kids the responsibilities of caring for a pet without the commitment of owning a larger pet like a cat or a dog which can cost much more in food, vet visits, toys, etc.
