Can someone tell me if I can do this???

Ok...first, This an old Pentium 100 system. I gave it away to a needy family. It had been sitting around collecting dust, so I thought I'd let someone get some use out of it. Well it seems the printer wasn't communicating with the computer. It turns out the ribbon cable that connects the paralell port with the motherboard was burnt, I mean it was fried...wires were showing and the plastic was melted. Anyway, my question is, can I buy a paralell to USB adapter and use the printer that way??? If so, I have done that and I still get "printer can communicate with the computer error". Any ideas...I did remove the burnt ribbon cable, but did not replace, just to let you know....

try the printer on another pc. maybe when the cable got burned it also damaged your printer.

Nope...not the case...first time this printer was used on this computer..the printer worked fine before...and come to think of it...I never got a printer to work on this old thing before...it used to be my daughter's....

i would think that stuff usually burns for a reason so you know the printer works? maybe the mobo is shot

Well, everything works fine except the paralell port... I tested the USB card I put in by plugging in a USB keyboard and it works great. I guess my question is ....will a printer work with the USB/Paralell adapter if my paralell port doesn't work. In other words..by plugging in the printer into the USB port..I shouldn't have to worry about the paralell port at all...right???
