Can someone tell me how letters of recomendation work?

I'm in the middle of school and i'm looking to get an internship and i want some letters of recomendation from my professors. Do i ask them to write them up and then send them to me or do i have to ask them to send them to the internships that i'm applying for?

Ask them if they are comfortable writing LOR for you. Sometimes they might take the lazy way out and make you write it, send it to them for review, and then send it off.

When they are done, NOT BEFORE, consider getting a gift or at least a thank you card for them.

Am i the one who is supposed to mail the LOR or is the professor? I may need to send them to like 20 potential employers for my internship, not to mention employers AFTER my internship...
