Can someone recommend me a UPS for my rig?

I really don't know which category this should go so general hardware it is!

I would like to put a battery backup on my Intel rig. Honestly I just want it for the surge protection mainly, a short amount of time to shutdown the system is a bonus. I was looking at 300w models but if I was gaming, the computer would most likely shut down on me. I just have limited experience with battery backups and would like some direction.

Thanks!

Something with a 600w or higher raing I would guess, personally I have a 1kw unit for server/router/switches and 1.5kw for mine/wifes/switch just to err on the safe side. Also, used units with hosed batteries are great, SLA batteries are cheap and from what I've used most brands just use re-branded stock sizes, 20 mins to swap and shazam you've got a higher end uni for often very cheap/free.

Oddly enough, I was at Bestbuy earlier today and picked up a BR1000G. I didn't see these posts but mfenn recommended the BR1000G. I guess I did good. :) Thanks

Also, where is a good location to put this thing? I hear that having it right next to a computer isnt a good idea. I have it right next to me on the floor right now.

EDIT: Wow Blain, that UPS is one heck of a deal! Tempted to return this 1000va.

I'd say that you want at least a 750VA (500W), preferably 1kVA for that rig. Something like this APC would do.

Actually I have the BX1000G. Not sure of the differences between the units. It actually held both of my computers when I unplugged the cord. The only issue I noticed was my Corsair PSU started emitting a buzzing noise while it was on battery. Do you think that will cause damage to the PSU?

The buzzing noise is because cheap UPSes like these (anything below $2K falls under the category of "cheap") output a square wave rather than a true sine wave. Not good for the PSU over the long term, but completely fine for the short periods of time that it'll be running on battery.
