if you want to work at a bank or something, because it will relate to your major, then I would do it. But if you want something more "sophisciated" just for the heck of it.....then I dont agree.
as an 18 year old poor college student, I reccommend a job that has the best hour/pay/benifits ratio. For example, I worked retail at Eyemasters selling glasses. They gave you 1 free pair of glasses every year, and one free eye exam every year. The pay was 7.00, but you get commission, so it was good. considering the best pair of glasses with frame and lenses costing around 500+ dollars and an eye exam around 50 bucks, I think that was a good deal.
or maybe you can sell phones, and they mght give you free service.....so that is one less bill to worry about every month.
or maybe a shop that sells microsoft products, and you can get free stuff...
or you can go into the food business, and get free food.
or maybe insurance company and get discount on car insurance.
I would strongly not reccommend getting a more sophisticated job just for the sake of it. I mean, sure it might sound better, but your young and strong, you can work hard, and the beniefits are really a lot better.
I mean, if you dont like retail just because of customers, dont take it personally........it's never your fault...just the company. you are just the middle man...
my 2.5 cents
