I need something big but not HUGE. big enough for a spiral notebook and 2-3 decent sized textbooks. It also would be nice if it had space for a small laptop.

I've looked at macys/walmart and they have HUGE ones and TINY ones.. nothing inbetween.

needs to be VERY comfortable.. I can spend $50-$80 or more if it's a nice one.

I'll be using in while on a motorcycle as well, fyi

I bought this pack a year ago:
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=TCG650

I really like it. It's got plenty of room for up to a 15" laptop, two large compartments for books/notebooks, tons of little storage places for pens/mp3 players, etc. etc. Very comfortable, very well built. I've yet to have any issues whatsoever with it. Hell, even if I didn't have a laptop I'd buy it again.

does it keep your laptop seperated enough from the books?

Yes.

Basically, there are two large compartments. The largest (and closest to your back) has a little separator thing that's designed to put a laptop in. It even has a little strap so the PC can't fall out. Both sides of the laptop have a layer of padding. Generally, I put my laptop in that compartment and all my notebooks in the second large comparment. Works great :)

You can find this bag in most B&M stores. I think I got mine at Best Buy.

I got this beauty in black from eBags:

Samsonite Typhoon

I didn't get it from some blind loyalty to the Samsonite name, either. I did TONS of research, and found that to be the best for my needs, which are:

- Has to hold two of my shoes and my gym clothes (I wear size 18 shoes and am 6'9", so that's a lot of room)
- Had to fit my laptop, mouse, and power adapter (I have a 12" laptop with a wireless card sticking out the side, and it fits fine)
- Had to be comfortable to wear as I ride a bike to work (a few miles one-way)

It fits them all AMAZINGLY, and I love it. Note that the laptop "compartment" has a separate, zip-up pouch for the laptop, to keep it protected.

Decent selection of backpacks there in a variety of sizes. They have a lifetime warranty which is good for and item like a backpack that can take a ton of abuse. Regardless of what you do to mangle the pack to the point of uselessness, they will always send you a new one if needed.
