I am looking for an MP3 player for my son and need some input on whats out there. I do not have a mac so the iPOD will not work unless they work on a PC. What do you recommend? Thanks

iPods work on PCs. You will need to download iTunes or use a third-party program (not recommended for the non-tech savvy).

I have a Sandisk Sansa Clip+ that I love. The interface is very simple, but the quality is great.

iPods work just fine with Windows. Although you can still get a great MP3 player from a non-Apple company, like the Sansa clip.

EDIT: oh wow

Third on the Sansa. Besides fuck Apple, Sansa has some great players. Rockbox firmware will extend that functionality further.

As others have said, the iPod works just fine on a PC, and has for over a decade. There are obviously other options, but I think the iPods are terrific music players; just replace the crappy earbuds they come with.

Believe it or not, the one I use most is my Shuffle, which is actually the first clip-on version from 2006. Still works like a champ, and I can take it anywhere with no fear of breaking it. It's scratched to hell now, but still works great.

The Sansa 8g is $56 at Newegg...any issues with these units?

Another vote for the Sansa Clip.

Best sounding audiophile chip. Cheap ($40 at Costco?). Can add a microSD card to go along with the internal 8GB. LONG lasting battery. Small--clips to the pants or shirt.

It's the overwhelming choice for people in-the-know.

Nope.

Bulletproof (non-buggy) little buggers. I've had two over the years in dirt, rain, rough treatment, deep cold, extreme heat. You name it.

Both are still running as good as day 1.

We're a PC home, but have come to love the iPod line. I've got a shuffle that I love because it's small and built like a tank. I've actually washed it twice and it still works. My kids have a nano and a touch that they love too. We've had many other mp3 players, but the iPods just seem to be built better.

We use either iShuffle, Floola or CopyTrans Manager (depending on model of iPod) to get away from iTunes and the issues with having to sync your iPod to a specific computer.

The Sansa Clip are good, if you wanna step up the quality, Colorfly C3 or my personal favorite, a Cowon J3.

If you're buying it for your son OP, get him an iPod, it's what he likely wants. Sansa's may be just as good, and many here would recommend it over an iPod due to the general anti-apple bias on this forum, but your son most likely wants an iPod.

Samsung made a couple small, decent android media players.
Would not recommend a Zune, even if it was dirt cheap and had lots of storage. You still need syncing software to use them.
I prefer android devices cuz you can drag & drop.

Archos has a wide variety of gadgets but the smaller ones kinda suck, and the big ones are no good for carrying around.

How old is your son?

If he is old enough, just get him an iPhone.

Other wise, iPod.

An iPod will be easier to use, and iTunes runs perfectly on a PC. iTunes makes it easy to buy new music and to copy the CDs that you own to the computer.

I have an older Sansa sitting in a box and it's a decent MP3 player, but it relies on Windows Media Player to manage music, which didn't work nearly as well for me as iTunes.

I have never used ipod, however I've used few sensa and xen players. He will be just fine with any player that takes mp3s. I can plug mine in any PC, they appear as disk with letter. What makes them more portable is no need for additional software to acess the mp3 device memory.

Get an older generation iPod, then put Rockbox firmware on it.

No Mac interface, done.

I don't like the sync function that comes along with apple products. I would recommend he find one that utilizes drag and drop. I don't know much about mp3s but maybe you can find one with android interface? Drag and drop is way easier compared to syncing, for me at least.

In iTunes you can just turn off atuo-sync and then drag-n-drop. Al least for my 120 GB iPod, not sure about the shuffle / nano.

Are you sure about that? I use to own a nano and had no ability to drag and drop files to my player MP3 like a flash drive. I use to own a Zune too and they both had no ability to drag and drop, very frustrating for a user like me. I couldn't even drag and drop into the itunes software. Can you currently drag and drop into the itunes software interface or does it require you to sync all your file locations? I just did a quick google search and it doesn't seem that this feature is available in apple products.

I can't drag and drop files into iTunes - any ideas?

Drag and drop to 2nd gen ipod shuffle?

I was talking about dragging and dropping from the itunes list of files on your PC, to the device icon for your iPod, while in iTunes. That's how I've always filled up my iPod.

Outside of iTunes (like in Windows Explorer) you can't drag and drop to an iPod, but inside of iTunes you can.

So you're chained to proprietary software to make your device work as you please. That's on top of the inflated hardware price. What a bargain...
