Can someone recommend a nice CPU cooler?

I'd like to have a new cooler for my P4 chip rather then the stock one-

Im looking for one that's VERY quiet yet allows me to overclock (1.6->2.4ghz)

Pretty much no question that the Zalman 7000 series is the king of quiet cooling right now. Thermalright SLK series is next best at quiet cooling, although performs better with bothersome loud fans.

SilentPCReview of Zalman 7000

Lots of people are overclocking with these things running at 5-7v. You just need decent case airflow.

Basic proven silent pc recipe:

1 Case with big slow exhaust, good airflow at the front
1 120mm fan PSU like Fortron or Zalman or SeaSonic
1 Zalman 7000 or SLK800/900 with quiet 80-92mm fan

Yea, looks like Asus put their caps too close to the cpu socket on that board, too bad.

Another cooler to consider then is the Swiftech MCX478-V.

Here's a good review on it.

Get some copper heatsink with an adjustable fan on it.
This way you can turn down the fan while it's not warm and turn up high when room is hot in the summer.

thx the Swiftech MCX478-V looks tempting but is a bit more pricey then zalman's plus its pretty ugly with that 92mm fan on top, lol but it might do the job since i want a quiet pc

i like the promise control raid thing the aopen has and its only 118 with 20 dollar mail in rebate so its under 100 bucks-- is the IC7 a lot better though?

Im running a P4P800 with a 2.8C and the Zalman CNPS7000A-CU. For me it was well worth it. Just as quiet as a stock heatsink, and runs about 6C cooler with AS5 on full load.

just read info on the prescott chips that are comming out on feb 2nd- the 3.0 prescott is cheaper then the current one by about 50 bucks--- should i wait? will it be faster?

I, and I think most people find the Zalman quite a bit quieter than the Intel stock HSF.
I believe the dB ratings support that as well though I don't have them on hand right now.
