I am looking for a good 16x internal DVD Rom player (quiet and fast). Can someone recommend something that you have used and works well for you. I'll be using this for some dvd and as my second CD Rom. (other is a cdrw).

I'm considering the Pioneer (slot) 106s as well as the Aopen 1640A but am open to any recommendations.

Thanks
Eman

Pioneer drives seem good too. I'd recommend a tray loading drive - when a CD exploded in my drive, someone commented that I was lucky it wasn't a slot loading drive. It would really ruin my day to have shards of plastic rocketing out of the drive right at eye level.
As for quiet, I really am not sure; my Liteon 16x/48x DVD-ROM is a bit noisy when it spins up, but that's about it. I don't know if this is common or just mine. I replaced the Pioneer drive I had because it went downhill after the CD exploded. This one was almost 3yrs old though; they probably have better stabilization technology these days. (at least that's what I'd hope)

Totally agree with Jeff7 on this. I had 2 slot loading Pioneer drives and they stopped working after a year or so. It would stop reading DVDs and CDs. I switched it with a Lite-On and haven't had any problems so far. It's a little loud when you first put the CD in but it's pretty quiet afterwards. Hope this helps.

I have two Pioneer 106S drives installed, and have two more on the shelf. They are getting hard to find. I just got two new ones for my shelf stock, and the source shipped me a pair of 117s (trays) and I sent them back. I can't stand trays - and am not worried about a shattering CD. The chances of shards making it through the dust curtains is not great. Besides - all my systems live on the floor - that's why I don't like trays.

Anyway, I have used slot drives for years with no problems - even CD ROM slot feed going back to the 16X days.

I had a Panasonic (Matsushita) and the performence was not that great....but the tray mechanism was fantastic.....:)

I have a Lite-ON 16x48x and find that's very good. But like Jeff7 I find it can be a bit noisy at times. My friend has the same drive and his is noisier than mine....so I think it varies from drive to drive....and can also depend on the "acoustics" of the case....some cases can build up odd vibrations when the disk is spinning. Most car CD players are slot driven so it's a proven technology....in which it looks like Pioneer are the leaders for DVD Drives.
