I need it for working out and also while doing homework. I do increments of 20 minutes of work and then 20 minutes of non-work like video games or something that I enjoy doing. This is supposed to help out a lot with my ADD.
i think most sport digital watches have countdown timers. i use mine to countdown a 1 minute rest interval while working out. you can set it to longer intervals as well.
When my friend took the LSAT the Kaplan course recommended some radio shaq timer that did the count down well and was convenient to use. Maybe check there.
