Can someone recommend a good CB radio?

I want to buy one to put in my car before I go to New Mexico this summer, but I don't know anything about them. Mainly I'd be using it to listen for truckers talking about speed traps coming up ahead. If I broke down in the middle of the desert it'd be nice to have.

Radio shack has this one for $50

but Radio Shack tends to be overpriced so I was thinking EBay might be better. Any brands or features to look for?

Uniden, Bearcat, Radio Shack are all good brands. There are plenty of great newsgroups about this stuff, i found a bunch when looking for info on [police] scanners.

depends on the kind of coverage/range you're expecting to get. Swing by your local Radio Shack to get an idea on pricing and sizing. I have a ~3ft antenna that i use for my police scanner and paid ~$30 at RS for it; seems to work pretty well.

I think I'd be happy with a 5-10 mile range. As long as I have enough warning of upcoming speed traps.

Don't forget to look for an antenna.

What sort of range should I expect with / without?

You really can't even run without, it could damage the transmitter and you get 0 range.
The goverment expects 1-5 mile range, which of course depends on the antenna and where it's placed on the vehicle. That probably also transmitting range, you could receive better then that.
