Can someone recommend a DVD player for your "Average Joe"?

IE. Not expensive and for someone who is not an audio/videophile with a medium quality TV and no surround setup? Thanks.

Toshiba SD-1200

I have that one and love it. I paid $199 for it at Best Buy awhile back.

If you look, you can get a toshiba 2200 for $210 shipped from mercata. That is what I decided on. It pretty much has all the cool features you need, and is pretty high quality, IMHO.

EDIT:
Thena again, with your friend's set up, he would be just as well off with a 4 head VCR, honestly. With no surround or nice TV, teh benefits of DVD cannot really be seen. Unless he plans to upgrade in the future, that is.

I've got a Toshiba SD-1600 I'm very happy with. Just one exception, it doesn't play CD-R's.

Fathom5,

I think you are mistaken on that one. Have you actually TRIED CDRs in it? The manual says it doesn't play them, but it's wrong. I have the SD-1600, and it plays CDRs (even really BAD ones), DVDRs, an anything else I can throw at it. Also, I have read TONS of user reviews of the 1600, and everyone says it plays recordable media EXTREMELY well, despite the manual.
