I prefer 48x Toshiba or Sony CDROM's for IDE, however Plextor is dope for SCSI.

I bought an IOMAGIC 56X, got a $30 rebate and haven't had one single problem with it since day one. The real mystery is that it is working in a Compaq computer!

I would recommend Panasonic. I would HIGHLY recommend AGAINST Acer! My school has a lot of them and most of them are starting to fail.

Another vote for Asus, although I've had no problems with Acer/Aopen either. Used Teacs in the past too, they usually make decent drives.

I like the Asus for their excellent drive damping, good DAE, and all their models from the 36X on up have both an analog and a digital audio out.

I recommend Panasonic/Matsuishita (or a Creative), very reliable and fast especially the 53X model. I highly go against ACER, I had 3 of their 40x drives fail on me. one kept making loud clanking noises, the other seemed to nullify my computer and fails to start up when pluged in, and the other just didn't read a single thing.

Edit: errr.. typo.. 52X.

Aopen makes nice cd roms but if you want decent quality cheap then Afreey makes some pretty decent ones.

Another vote for ASUS. The 40x and 45x are somewhat quieter than the 50x, and nearly just as fast.

Plextor 40XTSi

Fast, reliable, reads just about all CD media and 24X DAE. Need I say more?:) Yeah bit by bit extraction with a Plextor burner.

Whats more important. Access time or shear overall speed. I would think you would be fine with at least a 24x but the access time hac got to be as fast as possible.

For IDE Asus 50x
For SCSI Plextor 40x UW

Definately not Creative
My creative 32x died, got replaced with a 36x died got replaced with a 48x and that died.
By this time the orignal warranty was up. (Yes 3 CDRoms died in just over a year)
Then I got another Creative 48x which also died 6 months after I got and it got replaced with a 52x which died about 6 months later.
In about 2 years and 2 months, I've had 5 creative labs CDRoms die on me. I won't use Creative CDRoms anymore. Soundcards yes, video cards maybe, but no drives.

I have had a Pioneer 10x DVDRom for most of this time, and finally when the 52x died, I tossed it an bought my Yamaha CDRW.

My friend has an Asus 24x I think...and it's been with him since before My 32x Creative. The thing just won't die. My other friend has had a 40x Asus for about a year now and it's been perfect for him to.
I've had great experience building systems with Asus drives.
