Can someone post a cover letter that they recently used?

PM me with your email addy and I'll send you a Word file of one that has been generating more interest for me than I'm used to.

Basic one I threw together for a position I submitted my resume to a month ago:
Dear xxxx,

My name is minendo and I am currently a student in the Food Science department at Purdue University. As of December 21, 2003 I will hold my Bachelors of Science in ?Food Science. While searching current job postings I came across Northern Star?s posting for a First Shift Quality Assurance Supervisor, which is a perfect match for me. I have attached my resume and would like to be considered for said position.

My experiences at Purdue University have molded me into an excellent candidate according to your job posting. Not only have I taken numerous food science courses, but I have also worked for the past year in a computer training position. Although computer training is not a direct relationship to quality assurance training, it has helped me learn the best ways to train individuals of different backgrounds, knowledge levels, and experiences.

The Food Science course load as well as additional courses I took while attending Purdue University has provided me with the background information necessary to be a Quality Assurance Supervisor with Northern Star Foods. Included on my resume are additional courses taken beyond the scope of the Food Science degree requirements.

Please contact me at xxx-xxx-xxxx, or by e-mail at xxxxxx. I look forward to speaking with you. Thank you for your time and consideration.

"Hi <name>,

I saw your job posting on the PTC web site. I am very interested in the position and believe I am a perfect fit for it. I've attached a copy of my resume. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Thanks,
Marquee"

I sent that cover letter out a month ago. They got back to me the next business day. I should have the job offer by monday. 🙂

Cover letters are overrated IMO. They glance at resumes for five seconds on average, what makes you think they're going to read a long cover letter?

As to marquee's post, some firms are using search bots to comb through the zillions of resumes and cover letters they might receive for a high profile or highly desirable placement. The bot search for keywords; the more keywords, the higher the ranking.

Here is one I helped a friend write. I used this person's experiences to match up with the duties expected for this job. Frankly, I don't think it is enough for this job, but the letter looks good.
I am contacting you in regards to the position of Community Relations Manager posted on TeamWorkConsulting.com. I was excited to learn of this opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons organization. This position's essential duties and responsibilities appear to match many of my qualifications.

I specifically returned to college to gain the skills required to perform this job. Through my studies, my volunteer experience, and internship and work experience I developed many of the qualifications you are seeking:
* Bachelor of Arts in Communications
* Community relations experience with Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Durham Bulls
* Active officer and member of North Carolina Jaycees for 10 years

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provided an excellent education in communications and provided me the skills to attain an internship with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. I included a minor in sports science furthering my expectations into working within a sports community environment. Even though my professional sports employment was in baseball, I feel a greater affinity to foot ball and the community presence they project. This is an environment in which I want to work, share, and grow.

My ongoing relationship with the Jaycees allows me to share my devotion to community concerns and my enthusiasm in helping individuals. I am the chapter representative to the state organization and was instrumental in creating a brand new chapter with the help of local business and community leaders. My campaigns matched or exceeded the donation levels set by state and national programs. Through the community service projects I worked and managed, I realized how vital it is to give back to your community while reaping intangible returns. This is not a job but an opportunity to grow and mature as life choice. Many of the people or organizations I came in contact with impacted my life in ways I could never be able to explain and inspired me to want to be able to give back on a larger scale.

I have read about the many great community service projects the Atlanta Falcons provides to the Atlanta area and national organizations. I know there are demands upon this position in both producing and managing these projects. I have worked hard in the business of community relations. I have worked hard to establish a successful professional workplace in dealing with office demands such as proposal preparations, project implementation, and interpersonal relations.

Fan enthusiasm and loyalty translate into revenue. However, I believe that this position goes beyond the fiscal responsibilities to the company; this job applies to the heart of community responsibilities for the Atlanta Falcons. For our community is the heart and soul of our business. My experience and work ethics will benefit the Atlanta Falcons as this opportunity will fulfill my own expectations. I look forward to meeting you and learning more about this chance of a lifetime. You may reach me through my cell phone at XXXXXXX. You may also reach me through the Internet with my email: XXXXXXXXXX.
