I am looking for an up to date list (Most popular first, least popular last).

More than one answer would be great.

P.S. If anyone has comments into how these OSes fit or could fit into the Tablet/netbook market that would be great too.

I'd say WebOS is better suited to a tablet than Android is.

That said, Android has far greater market penetration at this point due to sheer number of devices running it.

I agree on WebOS... sadly, they have been too quiet with the pending HP buyout. The delay will likely hurt them quite a bit. I love the OS, but not sure HP can keep it afloat (in a meaningful manner).

The Palm Shareholders vote takes place tomorrow on the HP buyout. I'm thinking after that happens, we're going to start seeing some new WebOS hardware. They've been in stealth mode as they don't want to risk goofing up the impending sale, but once things are basically locked down, news will be coming. I'd be pretty surprised if there isn't a new phone out by August/September, and an HP Tablet running WebOS still seems on track before the end of the year.

Worldwide:
1. Symbian
2. RIM/BlackBerry
3. iPhone
4. Android
5. Windows Mobile

US only:
1. RIM/BlackBerry
2. Android*
3. iPhone*
4. Windows Mobile
5. WebOS

*Android sales overtook iPhone sales last quarter, but there's a good chance the iPhone will surge ahead by the time the next report comes out thanks to the iPhone 4's release.

Palm has screwed themselves with the lack of devices. Going well north of a year with the same device is an eternity in the smartphone world, especially when that device is a piece of junk from a quality standpoint.

The original Pre was sketchy in the quality department. The Pre Plus & Pixi Plus are both pretty solid devices.

Solid but outdated. The Pre was advanced when it was announced...nothing incredibly special by the time it released...and outdated by the time the Pre Plus came out.

WebOS is a fantastic system, I might put it #1 right now, but Palm really needs some cutting edge hardware to go along with it.

Oh I don't disagree with that. Though, admittedly, with overclocking easy to do on the Pre, you can get your phone running awfully fast. But the specs are still well behind what the newer smartphones are doing.

Yea, with the extra memory in the Pre Plus + OC, speed isn't the biggest problem. Its the low resolution screen (even Apple finally upgraded their screen res) and awful battery life that I consider the Pre's biggest issues.

Overclocking has made my non-Plus Pre less annoying. But I still hate it and can't wait til December to upgrade. I was ready to just pay full price to upgrade to the EVO but once I got the overclock going it became bareable.

Regarding worldwide RIM sales. Are they that high? I'm surprised.

The thing that killed the Pre for me was how flimsy it was... It felt like I could twist it and break it in two.

Since he asked about OS's you would have to include iPod in the iPhone list, which I think would gove it a significant boost.

The OP asked to rank smartphone OSes. I assumed that meant to rank the number of smartphones sold with each major OS, not rank the number of devices that have OSes that can be installed to smartphones. If the OP asked about netbook OSes, he'd want to know how many netbooks have one OS or another, not total sales of all OSes that are able to be installed on a netbook, or of all devices that can use the same OSes that netbooks can use.

Oh well, anyone can manipulate statistics to show anything they want. Apple fanboys will insist on comparing the "installed base" because iPhone sales have been strong for years, or they'll sort by device manufacturer since Android devices are split among several manufacturers. Android fanboys will want to look at OS-based statistics for recent sales quarters or even growth statistics since Android is growing quickly.

I'm not sure why everyone has to manipulate statistics to make it look like their personal favorite X is also the best-selling X.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm an Apple fanboy. I don't own an iPhone nor a Mac.

I was just clarifying that he did not ask about device sales, he asked about OS sales.

I'm not calling you a fanboy, I was speaking generally.

Anyway, "OS sales" is a little weird since no company sells their mobile OS directly to consumers. And like I said, I don't think it makes sense to count the iPod Touch as a smartphone since it isn't one. It's running a smartphone OS but it's not a phone.
