Okay, it absolutely refuses to boot from the CD, so I'm using a Win98 start up disk. I have run "fdisk" and formatted from the start up disk. Now, at the A prompt I'm trying to run "smartdrv" and it's telling me "bad command or file name"

What do I need to do to install Win2K after I have formatted and partitioned the HD?

Check to see if CDrom boot is enable in BIOS to install Win2k from CD. (try [Delete] or [F1] key at boot)

if you're typing A:\>smartdrv, then smartdrv better be on your floppy!

Boot from CD, or copy smartdrv.exe to your floppy.

assuming the hard drive is partitioned and formated properly...

- use the win98 boot disk to get to the dos prompt
- put the cd in the drive and in dos go to the cd (type x:\ where x is the cd drive letter)
- somewhere on the cd should be a program called bootdisk.exe (or something close to that)
- have 4 formatted/blank floppies and run the bootdisk program
- you now have the win2k boot disks...restart the computer with the floppy as the first boot device and have the first win2k boot disk in the drive and follow the directions. it will load the stuff from the 4 disks and then run the setup from the cd-rom

is this a win2k cd that you've booted from before?

sometimes, if you're slipstreaming you could lose the bootable functionality.

go here to get some good instuctions on how to make your slipstreamed CD bootable.

this can also work with a non-slipstreamed win2k cd that is somehow non-bootable. ;)

get the cd bootable. the 4 floppies are a drag!
