Because it baffles me, I?ve tried to understand it and I can?t.

I?m not being ignorant; I just don?t see how spending a fair amount of money on an expensive camera just to take pictures could be that fulfilling.

I love my technology, but I can?t bring myself around to this type of hobby. What is it that you guys love so much about taking pictures?

Well... because with good equipment they look better than reality? :p I love looking at a good looking pic... Its for the same reason people buy high end pcs to enjoy killer graphics in games... except here its only a still image, kinda hard to explain :p

Just a hobby. Some people spend money on graphics cards, some audio equipment, others camera equipment, etc. We should consider ourselves lucky we have the resources and free time to worry about such trivial stuff. :p

Because there is a female member that is an avid photographer, and they are all trying to impress her? ;)

It might also be because tech heads tend to be gadget nuts as well, and they want to get the most out of their camera purchase. ;) Plus pictures are meant to be shared. :)

I love pictures. They help you remember the good times that have passed you by, the stories of your life that have brough you to where you are today, and old friends that you might not see anymore.

Better equipment = better pictures = better memories.

Simple as that.

Looking back at my pictures from when I had a Sony camera in late 2000 and comparing to the pictures I have now with a Canon from 2004, the quality is ridiculously better. It's hard to take a bad picture as the quality of your gear gets better.

Because it is an art. As much as you might try to deny it, or think of reasons to exclude it as such, it is.

It's also a method of capturing a moment, capturing an image. You don't capture the feelings or thoughts inspired by the subject, but by viewing the image you can recall and hold onto those feelings and thoughts.

Almost anyone can take a DSLR and shoot random shots, load them onto their computer, turn them to grayscale and put interesting contrasts to them and call themselves a photographer. And as much as any professional photographer would like to deny that, it is also true.

So it only follows with such hobbies that anyone who finds true joy in the art of photography, that they would spend a lot of money in better equipment. But if that artistic expression isn't in your understanding, then that is perfectly understandable. To others, however, it is an art - in every sense of the word.

I apologize for the lofty language, but I'm watching The Illusionist right now, and the linguistics are getting to me. Just a side effect. Also I am slightly inebriated.

It's like any other hobby. Do you really need an explanation as to why some people find some things interesting?

Can you explain the fascination of people spending so much money tuning their cars (for folks that actually track, or even just do auto shows)? How about the money women put into purses? or how much money tech geeks spend on a gaming rig, and keeping it up to date? Or rock climbing? or sky diving? etc, etc, etc...

To me it's not about art, it's about taking good pictures. I prefer an accurate representation of what my eyes have seen, I don't like overly artsy pictures that are heavily post-processed.

It's not hard to look around and find something that is genuine and interesting. There are plenty of those things, and you don't have to skew reality to capture it. If you have to use photoshop to edit your image and skew the reality of the shot, then you're just misleading people.

Example: You take a night shot of a house on a hill, then photoshop it to enlarge the moon and move it closer to the house. That's misleading.

I know that now. I was basing my information off of other threads where some of ATOT's members were referring to "her."

It's okay Rich. We already know that you are clueless. You are being ignorant, but that's okay. Keep buying shoes and couches and going into debt and asking stupid questions.

Its far more fulfilling now that you don't have to spend a fair amount of money just to "see" those pictures like we used to have to do.
