I don't think so. Have you ever seen download sites (warez aside) for Win9x/NT? I have'nt.. Just because it's old, I don't think they'll start to 'legally' give it away.

Because a friend has a laptop which can't have a CD Rom and a floppy drive in there at the same time and he wants to reformat his HD...and Win3.1 is the only OS I can put on some disks.

My copy of Win95 came with both CD and disks. All 17 of them, but formatted as 1.7MB, to avoid copies ...

Just copy the win95/98 disk onto his hard drive and delete delete everything else. Boot from a floppy and then install off the hard disk. Delete the folder you originally copied the win disk to. Defragment.

Exact same result as formatting and reinstalling.


Alternatively, if his hard disk isn't big enough to do & you've got a cdr, you could make a bootable copy of win95/98.

Use a networked installation, borrow a PC Card and do it. You could use Linux (more useful and intuitive than 31) also. Anything with a floppy drive and an internet connection can download and install Linux for free, just install via ftp.

Windows 3.1 is unlicensed now. You can distribute it without worry. I have a copy but I used it sometimes when using those Win9x UPGRADE CDs. But I think I can get you a copy if you still need one, email me.

better yet, format the hard drive as bootable. Load drivers for the CDROM on it. Then boot to it in DOS mode, switch to the CD drive, and install.

If none of the aboe work, get an adapter for the laptop's HD so that it can be used with a regular IDE cable. Copy Win9x onto the drive, and/or just install on the desktop, and then update as needbe when its ported onto the laptop again.

There are various downloadable utilities for copying Microsoft DMF floppies such as Maxi-Disk available as shareware.If ya do download (or use Winimage to make)self extracting floppy images, saving the executables to CD and making floppies when you need them is a good way to stay supplied with floppies in the future. kewlone.com may have useful abandonware for your needs...
