I heard it down in London... Now i hear it all the time here from my dorm in Oxford...

I wish i could record it, but its random, so i can never tell when its coming...

It sounds almost like a car horn, but its two tones (high and low), that play in succession...

Almost sounds comical..... Waaaaaaaaaaa (high) Waaaaaaaaaaa (low) - think of a cartoon

Is it a car horn for some strange car? a train? a strange grotesquely large pigeon?

Ambulance?
Police car?
Fire engine?

Of course it could be one of the new "craze" ring-tones - who knows what crap people have on their phones now-a-days!

Try to record it...!

Edit: Is it just once it goes, or is it repeated? If it's once, it could quite possibly be a train if you've got a train line near you.

I don't think the train is all too close, but the noise sounds fairly far away... Its pretty loud, and echos a tad around the buildings here...

It just goes once, but randomly all times of the day.

It IS a train, I heard that all the time when I stayed at Worcester College at Oxford in 2002!!!

Worcester is the college nearest the train station.

I had the damndest time figuring that out too.

I did a study abroad for one semester in 2002. We had instructors from my school (in Atlanta), so I wasn't really GOING to Oxford, just staying in the dorm really while attending class.

Same as taggart, but mine is through OSU Law School.... It was $2000 cheaper than spending the summer at my home university, Stetson law. :)

Now you come to mention it, a train horn would sound quite like what aphex is describing :)
