Hi everyone, i'm not really interested in the actually setting up of a dns server on linux, because i already have a book that goes through it very well. i was more curious about what i need in order to actually run the dns server. what i mean is, do i have to register it somewhere? or can i simply point to my domain name server from a service like godaddy.com via IP? actually, godaddy.com wants a real name server like ns1.mydomain.com and not an IP... but does that mean i HAVE to register my dns server somewhere for a cost? there's no way i can do it for free?
when godaddy.com asks me for dns servers, they say:
Please enter valid name server host names present in the Network Solutions registry below (do not enter IP Addresses).
is this unique to godaddy.com, in that they dont' allow ip addresses? if so, who does allow ip addresses? i'd really appreciate the information any of you can offer 🙂 thank you very much!
