Can someone help show an encoding dumb ass how to encode mpeg and mpeg2 to DivX?

I've downlaoded all kinds of junk to no avail, I can't encode!! Could they make encoding any more confusing for the people who are new to it? I swear I feel like I've never touched a computer before when I try and figure out how to encode. Here's what I need to know, I have Nan-dub and the standard DivX 5.02 and player:

1.) With the above combo, how do I get Nan-Dub to encode an mpeg1 or mpeg 2 to a compressed DivX AVI?
2.) Do I need to do something extra to make sure the video still has sound?
3.) Why is a simple conversion process so complicated?????

Thanks for the help guys, when it comes to encoding in DivX I'm a very disgruntled little man 😱.
