Howdy,

I got a new HI8 camcorder and have a couple hours of footage i'd like to edit on my PC and burn to a CD or two

To do so, i picked up a "Dazzle digital video creator 80" which is basically a USB device with A/V inputs

It came with "MGI Videowave 4" and I have also used VirtualDub in the past

Anyway, i successfully recorded a few seconds of video, but it was almost 4 megs in a .mpg file !

So I tried converting it to .avi and compressing it with virtualdub but couldn't figure out how to make it smaller (it became BIGGER)

Does anyone know of any software that will do on-the-fly video compression? I'm afraid if I try to capture an hour's worth of footage that my 10 gig partition will fill up after only a few minutes. How do I avoid this?

I'm a HUGE N00b to video capture and editing, so any help is appreciated! I look forward to many hours on the "chopping block" !

Thanks!

Here is good Link for PC Video information. When I capture from my VHS VCR and I want the highest quality and I want to do any editing, I use MMC 7.5 and huffyuv for compression 30 seconds of 720x480 NTSC capture = 300 MB.

They cover capturing and compression codecs and everything in-between, so read up. PC video is fun, and time consuming, and far more than meets the eye. Good luck! I'll help you out, just ask away.
