Can someone help me with this trashed system?

My brother got a computer to take with him to college, T-Bird 750 (Socket A)/Geforce 256/128 megs of RAM. Before he left left, I had this thing hooked up and running quite nicely. He gets to school, and tries to get the network running. For some reason they use a Novell based system that requires some an Installation CD and running a setup program on the local machine.

Obviously, this thing changes something within Windows, because now his computer barely functions. It takes forever to complete even the most basic tasks.

-When he types his password to login, the *** symbols don't appear until several seconds after the keystroke.

-When he right clicks on 'My Computer' it takes atleast a minute (no joke!) for the menu to pop up so you can select properties. Same thing when you right click on 'Network Neighborhood' or the clikc on the 'Start' button. Opening any program is like this

-Computer crashes all the time (especially when running Windows Explorer)

-Safe Mode seems to run things normally, but when you right click on 'My Computer' now, the program crashes.

I spent 2.5 hours over the phone trying everything I could think of to fix this thing to no avail. The symptoms make troubleshooting a very tedious and difficult task. I've tried reinstalling the network adapter, the network protocols, different BIOS settings (memory speed, UDMA, etc) all with no effect (in fact, it may now be worse).

Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong? I've tried everything I could think of, and I'm out of ideas. I'm about ready to say format it, and start over. Please, if anybody has any advice, I'll take it, this is not the way I wanted my brother's first semester at school to start.

What version of windows is it. If you are running win95 I would recommend upgrading to 98se or ME when it comes out because they have upgraded networking capabilities.

Try loading winodows in safe mode with and without network support to see if that is the problem.

Get wintop or Another Task Manager to find out what is running in the background. It is very likely that there is a program that was installed that is taking up almost all the CPU time.

It will probably take a reinstall🙁, but these are two things you can try in the meantime.

i think you should boot up in safe mode and try uninstalling the software that the school has provided. If that is the last thing that you changed before the system began to suck then uninstalling it should do the trick. also it is a good idea to upgrade the OS to windows 98se or ME or 2000 whatever one you can get your hands on. hope this helps a little.

A reinstall will help, but he is going to have to get used to a lot of slower stuff with the network. It is an almost inherent fact that network interfaces will slow down a computer.
