The camera is for my dad....even though he is not a professional photographer, when he makes a purchase like this, he likes getting one of the best ones, to learn how to use it, and do the most he can with it.

There are a wide variety of 5MP Point and Shoot cameras ranging from the 300 dollar range to the 500 dollar range with Kodaks and Sonys being at the lower end and Canons being at the higher end...

from what im reading, what really matters in a camera besides megapixels and zoom?

The ones he is looking at include the canon s500, s50, and s60.....but is it worth it to spend 500 on these cameras? what is so special about them?

pretty much all we want is the best image quality with 3x optical zoom or more, 5mp for under 500 and a decent feature set to go wtih it

any reccomendations or things to say to point us in the right direction?

Don't concetrate so much on the 5 megapixel requirement. It is all about he lens. . .

A good 3 megapixel can blow away a cheaply made 5 megapixel.

As much as I loathe Sony digicams, I would check out the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1.

One of my friends recently bought one and I have to admit the pictures are pretty stunning.
